'Gangubai Kathiawadi': Sex Work is Work

Gangubai Kathiawadi is a 2022 Indian Hindi-language biographical crime drama loosely based on the true story of Gangubai Harjivandas, popularly known as Gangubai Kothewali, whose life was documented in the book Mafia Queens of Mumbai written by S. Hussain Zaidi. The film follows Ganga Harjivandas, a 16 year old young woman who elopes with Ramnik Lal and moves to Mumbai after he promises her a career in Bollywood. Unbeknownst to her, Ramnik is part of a human trafficking syndicate and she ends up being sold to a brothel where she's forced into prostitution.Gangubai navigates the world of sex trade and she soon becomes a powerful brothel madame who looks out for the welfare and safety of sex workers under her care. She becomes an icon of women's empowerment in her area and even goes ahead to win local elections giving her a bigger platform to advocate for sex workers.The over-arching theme in this film is that sex work is work.
