Game Night, an upcoming gallows humour film by Warner Bros. Pictures stars Jason Bateman and Racheal McAdams as Max and Annie, a cute couple who also happen to be game night gurus - trust me, you wouldn't want to have these two over if you're competitive. They frequently host game nights that they invite their close ring of friends over to.
Max's brother, Brooks, who he is evidently threatened by his sibling's prosperous life comes back to town with a grand plan to switch up the game night. Being the extra guy that he is, he hires actors to fake a kidnapping. He seems to have everything under control until it all gets out of hand.
Whatever happened to the genuinely funny films that don't need to be overly exaggerated to make it more "interesting"? Don't get me wrong, I'm all for mystery in films, particularly when it's really unexpected but, come on, we can't be having these "unexpected turn of events", over and over again. At some point the surprise wears thin. The script was evidently overthought. Every extra twist put in place for humorous effect has an adverse effect, making the movie more annoying instead.
Not to say that the actors don't do a really good job at portraying their individual characters. Jesse Plemons (Todd from Breaking Bad) is very entertaining as a weird divorcee while Lamorne Morris (New Girl) salvages what good is left of the film with his punchy lines.
If you find humour in really dumb stuff and actors making fools of themselves by going over and beyond the "usual", then you've landed on just the perfect film for you.
Game Night opens in Kenyan cinemas on March 9th.
