There was a point in time when riddims were such a hit amongst the Kenyan youth, particularly the ones in high school. The Jamaican artists had such a huge global impact with their catchy songs, most of which we hadn’t the slightest idea what they meant. Some of the greatest artists like Vybz Kartel had unfortunate turn outs at the end of it all (25 to life..yikes!) while others like Popcaan, are still in the game and making collaborations with international artists like Drake:

1. Party Shot by Popcaan

This was one of those songs that used to be blasted when it was time to go home for mid-term. The video was also a complete holiday favorite for many and would get any normal person excited for the short holidays:

2. Hold Yuh by Gyptian

This song took the world by storm to the point Nicki Minaj did a remix of it. Listen to both of them and see for yourself:

3. Summertime by Vybz Kartel
This was one of the songs when the Jamaican artist had just bleached himself. It was also a popular “summer jam” that you can still hear many matatus playing on your way to town and you can’t help but find yourself bopping your head to the tune:

4.Tell You Say by Vybz Kartel
There was only one dance style that was appropriate for this particular jam and trust it had to be “migingo”. The humming sound in the song is not only hilarious but it also tends to grow on you after sometime. This just goes to show that he had great talent:

5.Settle Down by Mavado
It’s one of those chill songs that are perfect for a Saturday afternoon drive out of town. It also has a way of making you subconsciously bob your head:
