You've heard of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. But how many of you know of Guion Bluford? He was the first African-American man to go to space and now a film about him is in the works. GUION is an upcoming short film co-directed by two American university film students.
The film will follow Guion Bluford in 1983 when he gets informed that he'll be part of the crew on the Challenger for NASA's 8th space shuttle mission. This makes him the first African-American in space.
The two students are Adam Madrzyk and Sagi Kahane-Rapport. Adam found the story while researching for his thesis. "I realized there is only grade school books on him and not much more, which is quite surprising. I looked at NASA's history and Guion's Wikipedia page, but there's a lot of information missing and a lot of gaps in his story," said Adam.
The two students later contacted Bluford for an interview and the possibility of a film. "He actually told us that when he was studying in high school he never intended on becoming an astronaut. He was always into aerospace, engineering and flight, so when he joined the air force, that's where he built his interest. But it was really at the end of his air force career that he realized that being an astronaut could be a possibility. From there, he learned about the selection process for NASA, applied and got in." Adam said during an interview with The Eye Opener magazine.
The first Kenyan to go to space would have been Saeed Khan. But the Luigi Broglio Space Centre that was to be built in Malindi did not come to fruition in May 2016. Kenyan filmmakers can still be imaginative enough to come up with something in that line. Yes, we can dream.
The GUION short film will premiere on May 4, 2018, at the Ryerson University Film Festival.
