Fashion for conservation is what Rock and Stones is all about. The company started in 2009 as a jeweler but soon pivoted after an experiment designing shorts from vibrant kanga fabric took off. Since then, they have worked with a number of conservation projects including Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Sweet Waters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, and most recently, The Milgis Trust, where the company donated 5% of sales from its Christmas sale towards the purchase of binoculars to help scouts on site with wildlife monitoring.
A love affair with the beach and ocean is the inspiration behind their support for the Kuruwitu Conservation Project (KCWA) and Welfare Community Based Organization (CBO). Founded in 2003, KCWA has transformed the once barren Kuruwitu ecosystem into biodiverse marine environment that is teeming with life. With the help of the local community, they have set aside a 30-hectare Marine Protected Area where fishing is prohibited in order to promote breeding. The results are remarkable and 12 years on, Kuruwitu coral reef is a flourishing tourist site, creating jobs for locals to work as rangers, boat captains and guides who take visitors on a picturesque journey through the reef.
'Our oceans are as colorful as our shorts and should be preserved for the sake of generations and generations to come. Love Life! Love the Planet!' says Sarah Vigne of Rock and Stones. The aim this Valentine and Easter is to channel 5 % of their profits towards helping KCWA explore opportunities for funding of their community projects and boost the sustainability of the conservation project.
