The two-day, two-night Africa Nouveau Festival went down this past weekend at the Ngong Racecourse Waterfront. This second edition of the new annual festival by the same people behind Blankets & Wine was originally scheduled for November 2017, but got pushed because of the unfavorable political climate around that time. Maybe it's a good thing that we had to wait a couple more months for it, because it was one for the books.
The transition of Blankets & Wine into this new all-encompassing music, culinary arts, film and fashion themed event is timely and exciting. The event attracted a good crowd from diverse nationalities. It made for a perfect, chilled-out weekend plan.
Here's a list of fab and drab moments from the festival:

FAB:

1. The Music
It was the ultimate Afro-fusion experience. On the menu was a melange of beautiful sounds from all over the continent featuring performances by Wanja Wohoro (Afro-indie soul), Phy (Afro-pop), DJ Cortega (Afro-house), Makadem & the Electrique Bengaloo (playing a dreamy fusion of the traditional Luo instrument Nyatiti and polished electronic sounds), MDQ and Blinky Bill.
Jozi music stole the show in the end courtesy of festival headliner Kwesta. Homeboyz's G-Money shut down the whole show with a phenomenal performance, you know being the king of hype, with a mix of hip-hop, Kwaito and house music.
2. Kwesta's Performance
Let's be real, this South African hip-hop star has a bright future ahead of him. His performance was nothing short of amazing. Wrapped in a red-plaited Maasai blanket he wooed the crowd with his hit singles, Spirit, Ngiyaz'fela Ngawe among others. The South African rapper and his rockstar-level guitarist put their stamp on the fledgling Africa Nouveau stage with a show-stopping set. It was definitely the highlight of the festival.
3. The Fashion
The crowd showed up dressed in their made in Africa best. It was a nice array of Afro-Punk with a mix of African prints all designed to perfection. What's more, they actively took part in artistic body painting which fit perfectly into the theme.
4. The Food
If you're a foodie, then this place was as good as a candy store to a child. There was all you can eat, with established restaurants appearing with their food trucks on the ground; Java, J's Fresh Bar and Kitchen, Concord Hotel and suites as well as individual business owners. The sumptuous smell of roasted beef, pork and chicken was the order of the day. Of course, these were all available at an extra cost, some subsidized.
5. The Activities

It was really cool to see everyone kind of doing their own thing; little cliques would spin around multi-coloured lights creating a spectacular ring of lights, the fire twirler also kept the crowd entertained as he spun away his sticks of fire, the face and body paintings as well as the maze were a few of the things that were pretty awesome.
6. The Fashion Vendors

It's very impressive to see how the fashion scene has really grown in Kenya with so many creative fashion designers showcasing mastermind pieces, the world surely has something to watch out for. There were custom vests for the guys, sexy African print swim suits by Ohana swimwear, kimonos, made in Kenya Jewellery and the list goes on.

DRAB:

1. The brawls
As is (almost expectedly) with any event that involves any form of indulgence, be sure that there'll always be drunk fights over laughably trivial things - leaving innocent party-goers who just want to chill and have a good time either violently shoved around (like I was), or somehow showered in beer (again, just like I was).
