Nanyuki town in Laikipia county is a three hour drive from the city and is a gateway to northern Kenya. Once a sleepy farmers town, Nanyuki is now a bustling urban center with lots to offer.
Nanyuki hosts the main Kenya Air Force airbase and the British Army training camp and is surrounded by gorgeous scenery with the iconic Mt. Kenya towering over it. Nanyuki is an expat hub and has a plethora of attractions and resorts for individuals, couples and families.
Here are some places you can check out during your Nanyuki Getaway:
Ngare Ndare Falls
The Ngare Ndare Forest Reserve is run by a community trust and boasts a beautiful suspended one-kilometre canopy walk from which you can (if you are lucky) look down on buffalo, elephants and other animals. The trees here are also full of beautiful Turaco birds and you can usually watch them arguing and chasing each other around. Nearby the canopy walk are several waterfalls and water holes.
You can jump off cliffs into the water and enjoy a cool, refreshing swim. Entrance to the reserve is Ksh 200 for citizens, Ksh 400 for residents. You also have to hire a ranger to accompany you for safety if you go to the falls.
Lake Rutundu
Lake Rutundu in Nanyuki is great for rainbow trout fishing. The lush surroundings are fantastic for those leisurely afternoon walks.  Lake Rutundu  is also a bird watching haven and you can also go horse riding in the vicinity
Rutundu Log Cabins  offers accommodation and activities around the lake. Worth a check-in.
Ol Pejeta Conservancy
The Ol Pejeta Conservancy is a not-for-profit wildlife conservancy in the Laikipia District of Kenya and the largest sanctuary for black rhinos in East Africa. The conservancy is a 400 sq. km game reserve that boasts one of the highest game-to-area ratios in the whole of Kenya. This vast, diverse and wild habitat offers you a chance to come very close to some of the world's most endangered creatures (Northern White Rhinos) and chimps. Ol Pejeta offers comfortable  accommodation in the conservancy
Here are some fun things for the whole family to do at Ol Pejeta:
  • Take game drives.
  • Take a walking safari through the bush.
  • Go horse riding amongst the dwellers within the endangered species enclosure.
  • Go camping.
Equator Point
Nanyuki is situated just north of the Equator (0° 01' North). Make a point to visit the Equator Marker and try out the Coriolis effect experiment. Not too far from the equator point is Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club resort that offers lux accommodation. One of their rooms is actually bi-sected by the equator- you can stand on one side of the bathroom and your partner on the other and be in two different hemispheres!
