KenyaBuzz Raha is a simple yet useful mobile app for anyone who's not, not Kenyan or is in Kenya and in pursuit of harmless fun. A first of its kind in Kenya, Raha is powered by the KenyaBuzz website which has for the past seven years been informing its audience on everything events, lifestyle, movies and more. The app filters the website for only the important information you'll need on the go, making it your most convenient and reliable local entertainment guide.
Raha, built and designed by Kenyan app developer Lee Mungai, is a product of a 2010 Tandaa grant won by KenyaBuzz and issued by the Kenya ICT Board. It is currently available in both Android and Windows versions with the latter made available only a month ago (April 2014).
Both versions share a similarly clean and intelligible layout that achieves the desired end content-wise. However, the Windows version boasts superior functionality thanks mostly to the swipe feature incorporated in its overall design. Both versions have reasonable loading speeds which can of course go either way depending on your carrier.
For content, the app is divided into four sections; What's On?, Movies, Restaurants and Other Fun. What's On? gives information on every event and shindig that's happening around you. You can filter these by Area (start by City and narrow down to a specific region), Category (Theatre, Festivals, Craft Fairs, Nightlife etc.) or Date. The Movies section is definitely one you'll love. It not only keeps you up to date with the latest film releases but also provides you with up-to-the-minute movie showtimes for all Kenyan cinemas.
The Restaurants tab is designed with culinary comfort in mind. Whether you’re searching for the perfect hideaway to beef and reef with your date or just a spot for a booze cruise, this grill directory has all the answers. Once again, this section can be narrowed down by Area and most importantly, Cuisine. On Other Fun, a scroll of all other hangout establishments are provided to aid your pursuit of leisure; they include among others, Bars & Clubs, Fitness Centres, Yoga Studios, Spas, Sightseeing spots, Casinos and Cultural Centres. Both versions of the app also come with a powerful search engine for a quicker and more direct option.
Of course as a KenyaBuzz person myself I might be overestimating the usefulness of my parent company's app, but don't just take my word for it; Google says it's a pretty kick-ass app as well… not in those exact words but they might as well have written that in their Google Innovation Award plaque presented to KenyaBuzz. The 2013-2014 Innovation Award in Tourism was specifically for the Android version of Raha and the solutions it provides “to improve the lives of Kenyans and leading the way in achieving Vision 2030”.
The apps are free to download on their respective app stores and there's also a bonus for Samsung users with the app available on the Samsung Store. So go ahead and get yourself the Raha app and open your world to all the blithe and jolly Kenya has to offer…right on your fingertips.
Kenya never stops Buzzing. You shouldn't either
