Last weekend, I got a chance to attend Jikiji Folana, a benefit concert organised by Tana for Stand Up Shout Out (SUSO) The theme for the event was Ignite Your Inner Universe. Tana's vision was to spark interest and conversation around arts as well as create a platform for budding artists in all fields from visual arts to poetry, to music, and acting. This was Tana's first show and she plans to make Jikiji a seasonal event. Here is how the first edition went down.
The venue was the Elephant, along Kanjata Rd. The place is easy to get to and relatively secure. In terms of space, it might not be a good idea to host an event on the grounds as it is not suited to accommodate large crowds.
Because of the rain, we all had to move from the grounds to the live room inside The Elephant Studios. The place was quite cramped, but Tana's infectious positivity had us all appreciating the intimacy of the evening instead of grumbling about the limited space.
The most memorable performances of the evening were Maya, an RnB artist who dabbles in aspects of indie music to create her sound. Her song Body Count was hilarious, as she narrated the daily struggle of dodging amorous suitors while affirming her independence. The second number, Faithful, was a poignant ballad about an abusive relationship.
Tim and Vincent's set was an interesting fusion of rock and Afro sounds. They performed two original songs, Shubiri and Nairobi Nights.
Because of the unavoidable mishaps, like the rain and a temporary blackout at the beginning of the show, we didn't get to experience the full range of Jikiji's line-up. However, the overall verdict is that Tana and her line-up of artists did a great job.
