From the heart of Nairobi's grassroots communities is Maurice Njuguna (JJ), a toy maker changing the game by creating eco-friendly toys from upcycled and recycled materials. Maurice, the founder of JJ toys, is on a mission to bring joy to kids while also making a positive impact on the environment.
JJ's journey began when he noticed the excessive amount of waste in his community. Instead of letting it pile up, he saw an opportunity to repurpose it into something useful. He started experimenting with different materials and found that he could create intricate toys out of discarded items like plastic, cardboard, and scrap metal.
As his collection of toys grew, JJ began to work with local youth, teaching them how to make the toys and giving them opportunities for employment. Many of the young people in his community lack access to formal education or job opportunities, so JJ's initiative has been a game-changer for them. Not only are they learning valuable skills, but they are also earning a sustainable income.
