Easter is upon us and if there's a central figure during this time (besides Jesus), it's Pontius Pilate (not to be confused with the popular work-out). He served as the fifth governor of the Roman province of Judaea during Emperor Tiberius' reign from 26/27 to 36/37 AD.
He is primarily known for his role in overseeing the trial of Jesus and issuing the order for his crucifixion. In contemporary Christianity, Pilate holds importance and is mentioned in both the Apostles' and Nicene Creeds.
Some sects, such as the Ethiopian Church and the Coptic Church, believe that Pilate converted to Christianity due to his portrayal in the Gospels as being hesitant to execute Jesus. As a result, he is venerated as both a martyr and a saint in these religious communities.
The play follows Pontius Pilate's journey from exile in ancient Gaul to his ascent to power in the Roman Empire, aided by his influential friends and ambitious wife. However, his appointment as governor of Judea brings him face to face with corrupt leadership and strong convictions. When a young Rabbi's teachings threaten to challenge his wife's beliefs and provoke an angry mob, Pilate must choose between the demands of the crowd and the life of an innocent man. The play explores themes such as marriage struggles, political corruption, dysfunctional royal family, kingmakers, and the search for truth, making it highly relevant to contemporary life.
