AfriDocs is a free streaming service that shares African documentaries and it has recently partnered with UNESCO. They are presenting an innovative project called Colours Of The Alphabet as the world is set to celebrate International Mother Language Day on 21st February. What makes the documentary unique is that it will be a simultaneous multi-lingual release across Africa. Meaning, you can watch the documentary in different languages from different parts of Africa at the same time including two of Kenya's indigenous languages.
Colours Of The Alphabet (COTA) follows three Zambian children and their families as they start school and they have to answer the question, 'does the future have to be in English'? The three kids come from a rural background and they are trying to make it in life by pursuing education. In school, they discover that the language used to teach is different from what they speak at home.
In Kenya, there was a time mother tongue used to be taught in school but that is no longer the case. Is it worth teaching the same or are we past that? As we celebrate our local languages on 21st February, this documentary will perhaps give us a bit of persepective. The film will be in 27 African languages including Kenya's Kikuyu and Swahili. It will also have an English subversion and will be available on the AfriDocs YouTube channel for 30 days starting 21st February.
COTA's release will be followed by a social media campaign with the hashtags #mytonguemystory #MotherLanguageDay or #IMLD2018 which you can participate in as well.
Nick Higgins, who is the producer of the film said, "We are delighted to be working with AfriDocs and UNESCO to bring this unique documentary film to audiences all across Africa. For many viewers, this will be the first time they will see a film subtitled in their own language and we hope this new network of film translators will continue to subtitle films for AfriDocs and others, in what would be a fitting legacy for International Mother Language Day 2018."
