The June edition of Shorts, Shorts and Shots is going down on 7th June at Prestige Plaza. The edition will be in partnership with Nairobi Film Festival and will have an all Kenyan line-up on their catalogue.
Boxed is one of the films that will be screened on the night, and it is a fictionalized short film based on the true story of the terrifying daring escape of Henry "Box" Brown, a 19th-century Virginia slave who escaped to freedom at the age of 33 by arranging to have himself mailed in a wooden crate in 1849 to abolitionists in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The journey took 27 hours.
Wanjiru Njendu, a filmmaker of Kenyan descent based in Los Angeles directed the film. In an interview with the East African, she explains that the idea for Boxed came about via chance encounter she had with Karyn Parsons (Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Major Payne) at the 2018 Hollywood Creative Forum. Karyn ran a company Sweet Blackberry that taught children Black History via animation. The first story they did was Henry Brown's.
Wanjiru latched onto the idea of telling Henry's story, but as a psychological thriller with the audience in the box with him for the duration of his trip.
