Basthma is an artist whose sound is an eclectic mix of all his musical preferences. "It's sugar, spice and everything nice," he says. That is part of his allure, that he is not afraid to experiment, and whatever speaks to him and allows him to express himself in the best way possible, and gets people dancing, is what he will do. The former is the emotional aspect of his music, the latter, the lightheartedness of it.
He coined the term bonk, which he says is a combination of bouncy and emotional beats. He has had a number of live performances since he started as a DJ and producer, his most recent and notable appearance being, at Africa Nouveau 2018, which took place in February this year.
KENYABUZZ: Why the name Basthma?
BASTHMA: Well the name Basthma came from my love of bass in music and basically the love of bass music and the fact that I had asthma as a kid.
KENYABUZZ:  How long have you been in the music industry?
BASTHMA: About three and a half years now.
KENYABUZZ: At what point did you realize music was what you wanted to do?
BASTHMA: When 6 am brought Mat Zo my life and its direction changed to music completely. It was quite and experience for me and my best friend who i attended the event with
KENYABUZZ: If you weren't a music artist what would you be?
BASTHMA:  I would most definitely be a racing driver.
KENYABUZZ: Some interesting things about you that you'd like your fans to know?
BASTHMA
: My other interests would really be summed up in motor sport. I'm such a petrol head. I love watching formula 1 among other race events and GO carting. Other than that i enjoy nature and just looking at paintings.
KENYABUZZ: What is the one misconception about DJs/Producers that you dislike?
BASTHMA: That they are supposed to conform to certain ways of expression in music when art is all about experiments and breaking boundaries and everyone has their own special way of doing things and expressing themselves
KENYABUZZ: Do you play any instruments?
BASTHMA
: Currently, no. But if I got the chance to learn how to learn some instruments, they would be the keys, bass guitar and maybe just maybe, the sax.
KENYABUZZ: If you could collaborate with any music artist, dead or alive, who would it be?
BASTHMA: Collab, dead? Aaliyah. She just spoke to me and her voice is just something else. Alive I'd say Mo Vibes, Dilip, Faru (in the works), Blinky & Ukweli ( his new track with Karun and Jason Kalinga just killed me!!!
KENYABUZZ: Why the mask?
BASTHMA:
The mask is my alter ego, Basthma, it's like a plane or a car. So I am the pilot.
KENYABUZZ: What should we expect from you this year?
BASTHMA
: An album most def, I'd say a couple of live performances here and there too if things go well.
KENYABUZZ: Where can we find your music?
BASTHMA
: On SoundCloud. My user name is Basthma
