Kizazi Moto, a ten-part animation anthology created by Disney+, envisions a futuristic Africa and showcases the talent of emerging African creators from Nigeria, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Egypt, Uganda, and Kenya. The Afrofuturistic compilation draws inspiration from the cultural impact of Marvel's Black Panther and explores worlds of time travel, aliens, and more. The official trailer is available for viewing.
The stories in Kizazi Moto are diverse and include Enkai by Ng'endo Mukii (Kenya), which follows a little girl attempting to capture the attention of her single mother, a cosmic deity trying to save the planet. Stardust, created by Ahmed Teilab (Egypt), tells the story of Nawara, a brave stable girl who embarks on a dangerous mission to find the Oracle after being given a blank scroll of destiny during her coming-of-age ritual.
Hatima, crafted by Terence Maluleke and Isaac Mogajane (South Africa), is set in a future Africa where tribes fight over a powerful resource called Hatima, which enables cellular regeneration and human survival underwater. Moremi by Shofela Coker (Nigeria) is a sci-fi version of a Yoruba myth that follows Luo, a spirit boy lost in the realm of the gods, and his scientist mother Moremi, who is working to bring him back to the world of the living.
Mkhuzi (The Masked Racer), a creation of Simangaliso 'Panda' Sibaya and Malcolm Wope (South Africa), is the story of Manzo, a half-human, half-alien boy who must win the Soweto Grand Prix to save his neighborhood from destruction and defeat the galaxy's greatest racers. Mukudzei - Adventures of Muku by Pious Nyenyewa and Tafadzwa Hove (Zimbabwe) follows Muku, a rebellious wannabe influencer, who is transported to an alternate futuristic Zimbabwe that was never colonized after being in contempt of a sacred monument.
Surf Sangoma by Nthato Mokgata and Terence Neale (South Africa) is set in a future Durban surrounded by a massive wall to protect the city from deadly waves. Best friends Njabulo and Mqobi dream of surfing in the ocean outside the wall. Herderboy by Raymond Malinga (Uganda) is about a young hero who must protect his tribe's cyborg cattle from a deadly spirit monster that threatens their way of life.
First Totem Problems by Tshepo Moche (South Africa) follows Sheba, a determined teenage girl seeking to receive her digital totem, even if it means taking down the ancestral technocracy and ending an ancient feud. You Give Me Heart by Lesego Vorster (South Africa) is set in the next millennium, where the power of gods is determined by their social media following. An unknown person strikes up an impossible romance with the most adored goddess of them all.
Disney reports that Kizazi Moto will feature a talented cast, including Florence Kasumba (Black Panther), Kehinde Bankole (Blood Sisters), Pearl Thusi (Queen Sono), and Nasty C (Blood & Water). Keep an eye out for Kizazi Moto later this year.
