Breast Cancer Awareness Month, marked in countries across the world every October, helps to increase attention and support for the awareness, early detection and treatment as well as palliative care of this disease.
In Kenyan, women aged 40 and above accounted for nearly 60% of the new cases and close to 60% of the deaths. (MOH 2018).
Early detection can make a huge difference to the outcome of the disease so mammograms are the ideal tool. A mammogram is a low-dose x-ray exam of the breasts to look for changes that are not normal. A mammogram allows the doctor to have a closer look for changes in breast tissue that cannot be felt during a breast exam. Women ages 40 to 75 years should get a mammogram every 2 years.
