It is Nairobi's most prestigious event - or to be more accurate, it is marketed as such. But the 2018 Diner en Blanc Nairobi at the Waterfront- Karen, left a bad taste in the mouth of its attendees. From food that had gone bad to the shortest live performance I have ever witnessed, it all felt like a total rip off. But first, the lowdown.
The Lowdown:
The premise of the event is to have guests fully glam up in white, gather and share a meal at a secret location. The venue is only revealed to the guests on the day of the event. It's an idea which origininated in Paris, France in 1988. The Nairobi event started in 2015. To maintain its air of exclusivity, event attendance is only by referral or by signing up on a waiting list. Guests bring their own food, dinnerware and drinks.

*Everyone was dressed to the nines. From beautiful bespoke fascinators to elaborate masquerade masks and unique accessories. It really was Nairobi's most elegant crowd.
* The DJ kept the energy of the party from start to finish. To settle guests in, he played popular RnB jams before switching it up to upbeat party numbers as the evening progressed. Dan Aceda was the live performance of the evening. Even though his set was short, probably half an hour to an hour long, he gave it his best by engaging the crowd and pulling them to their feet to jam along with him.
* The food courtesy of Ki.chen Restaurant was horrible. It had gone bad and the beef that came with the overcooked pasta looked more like inedible brown muck. In an attempt to placate the guests, they replaced the bad food with a fresh serving of mukimo and beef, mukimo and chicken or mukimo and potatoes for the vegetarian menu. Considering the cost of food wasn't included in the ticket price, and had to paid for separately, this was a bad look. The food and dinner sets option was for guests who couldn't bring their own.
* Dan Aceda's band doing their sound check on stage, during the dinner for almost an hour was the snooze fest of the year.
* The watered down complimentary vodka cocktail given to guests at the entrance which they should have called an ice cube cocktail with a touch of Ciroc.
* We were miffed that dinner started two hour late. We got in grumpy and very hungry especially because we were punctual and arrived at Waterfront on time at 5 pm.
