Kenyan based Tanzanian artist, Dida is one to watch this year. Her latest single, Badili gives a taste of what to expect from her this year. Dida has been singing professionally for six years and draws her musical inspiration from her life experiences. I sat down with her to find out what she is all about...
KENYABUZZ: At what point in your life did you realize you wanted to do music?
DIDA: After I recorded my first song, Dhahabu and I got a lot of positive feedback, I decided to give it a shot. Plus I had been singing from a young age so the transition to professional music was easy.
KENYABUZZ: What is your latest single, Badili, about?
DIDA: The song was written by Ben C. I wanted a song that encouraged women to stay true to themselves. In this industry, you get a lot of misguided advice that you have to look a certain way in order to make it. Generally, the world has a lot to say about how women should or should not look like. The standards are impossible to reach. I wanted to tel women basically, to just be themselves.
KENYABUZZ: How favourable is the Kenyan music scene to new artists?
DIDA: When I started in 2012, it was not easy to get airplay or to get people to share your music and get it out there. It's still not so easy now but things have definitely improved. Especially because of social media. It is easy to directly share your music with your followers.
KENYABUZZ: Is music a full time job?
DIDA: Yes
KENYABUZZ: If you weren't a musician, what would you be?
DIDA: An air hostess. Before I started singing professionally, I worked in the airline industry as cabin crew.
KENYA BUZZ: If you could collaborate with anyone in the world, whether dead or alive, who would it be?
DIDA: Ciara and Micheal Jackson. I grew up on their music. Continentally, Tiwa Savage.
KENYA BUZZ: Do you have a favourite local artist?
DIDA: No. I love all Kenyan musicians. Kenyans make great music.
KENYABUZZ: Do you play any instruments?
DIDA: No. But I would really like to play the piano.
KENYA BUZZ: What interesting thing(s) about yourself would you want your fans to know?
DIDA: I am very easy going and I talk a lot
KENYABUZZ: What should we expect from you this year?
DIDA: A lot more great music.
