Dhalinyaro (Youth) is a 2017 Djiboutian film directed by Lula Ali Ismaïl- the first female Djiboutian film director on record.
The story revolves around the lives of three friends from different socio-economic backgrounds, with varied attitudes towards life, but bound by friendship. Dhalinyaro is a coming of age story and offers us a never-before-seen view of Djibouti and the dynamics of growing up in the country.
There is Asma, from a modest conservative background who dreams of going to medical school; Hibo, a rebellious, liberal from a wealthy family; and Deka is the binding force in the friendship. She is torn between her divorced mother's ambitions to give her a better life and her own conviction that she wants to study and succeed in her own country.
