The glamorous fashion show saw the culmination of fashion designers, creatives, models and hair extension company Darling- who was the main sponsor- for one of the most innovative and invigorating runway shows thus far. Olive Gachara, the brainchild of the event and CEO of Couture Africa, brought to light the existing demand for made in Kenya attire through the 2-day event that had various workshops- which were free to attend for the public- held at Two Rivers Mall and Sankara Nairobi
The event, which launched on 6th April with workshops that were held concurrently at Sankara and Two Rivers mall, brought together giants from the fashion, beauty and creative industries. They had four workshops in place all featuring panels with renowned statuses in their individual industries. The hairnomic workshop kick-started the event featuring a panel with the likes of Maureen Murunga (Founder of Amaive Beauty Salon) and Muli Musyoka (the First I.A.T Certified Trichologist in East and Central Africa) which focused on the stylist-customer relationship and real life experiences of the same.
The African Renaissance made for the second workshop run by talent management firm, Value Added talent exposed the audience to perspectives and views of the new-age creatives the likes of Karun Mungai (musician) and art director Brian Msafiri. The Business of Fashion was the third workshop and saw a lively conversation between creative directors and fashion designers the likes of fashion designers;Ogaki Mosomi and John Kaveke, which highlighted on the importance of mentorship for upcoming designers and players in the fashion industry.
The final workshop was the Industry Leaders Panel Discussion with panellists the likes of Creative Director & Fashion Designers Deepa Dosaja and CEO of Vivo Wandia Gichuru and the Google country Manager Charles Murito who deliberated over impact of technology on the fashion industry as well as the future and possibilities e-commerce provides to fashion designers.
Day 2; Saturday 7th April saw the largest fashion showcase take place at the Two Rivers Mall. Darling Runway Kenya set-up three catwalks in different locations of the mall and had 7 runway shows take place across these three locations every hour on the hour from 12 noon to 6pm with a troop of 60 runway models and 15 high fashion hostesses to guide the audience from location to location. Kit was a mix of upcoming and established designers; Kiko Romeo, Frika Designs, Kidosho Apparel and a lot more each given a one-hour window to showcase. With an approximated 3,000 extra visitors per day at Two Rivers Mall during the two-event days, one can easily conclude that Darling Runway Kenya was indeed a flaming success.
