In recognizing the impact of technology within the human sphere, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) considered February 13 to celebrate World Radio Day. The proclamation came into force during the organization's 36th Annual General Conference in Paris, France.
The theme for the 2019 commemoration is Dialogue, Tolerance and Peace. "This encourages and raises awareness to various radio stations which use the tool as a medium of communication to promote democratic debates and foster unity through common goals and causes.
Previous themes included the 'Radio is You' in 2017 which was celebrated how audiences interact with radio and 'Radio and Sports' in 2018 that celebrated momentous sporting events.
Radio has been (and still is) the most common form of communication both locally and internationally as stated by UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres. He adds, "Radio is a powerful tool.  And it is a personal, interactive platform where people can air their views, concerns, and grievances. Radio can create a community. For the United Nations, especially our peacekeeping operations, radio is a vital way of informing, reuniting and empowering people affected by war."
Despite the influence of new age social media for breaking news, radio has still maintained due regard for the culture in providing insights and education to the society. Even with change in digital technology, radio has also tried to keep up with the dynamism .In extending towards a wider audience reach, radios stations have had to upgrade their services to include passing information not only via radio as a tool but also online through live stream.
UNESCO in 2014 estimated that up to a billion people still lacked access to radio which was observed as a worrying figure in matters of relaying information to every part of the world.
In Kenya, prominent radio presenters took to their social media platforms to join in the celebration.
