The Rundown
Boss Level is a 2021 American sci-fi action film directed by Joe Carnahan and written by Carnahan, Chris and Eddie Borey, from a story by the Boreys.
It stars Frank Grillo as Roy Pulver, a former special forces agent who is trapped in a time loop that constantly repeats the day of his murder. Agent Pulver uncovers clues about a secret government project that could unlock the mystery behind his untimely death.
In a race against the clock, he must hunt down Colonel Ventor (Mel Gibson), the powerful head of the government program, while outrunning skilled ruthless assassins determined to keep him from the truth in order to break out of the loop, save his ex-wife (Naomi Watts), and live once again for tomorrow.
The Review
Having endured a never ending death-day cycle, Grillo's active participation in frantic car chases and shootouts makes him as badass as they come. Boss Level oozes a video game adaptation feel, thanks to Director Carnahan's well laid out complexity of sequences that fit the bill.
Despite the plot's similarity to its predecessors, namely Groundhog Day, Repeaters and Edge of Tomorrow, the movie provides more than enough thrills to keep things moving in the right direction.
However, every once in a while, the movie stumbles over its own ideas by failing to emphasize the moral of the story. That aside, it appears that Boss Level is a level up and will be the start of a new franchise.
