Have you already seen Black Panther? If yes, then you are part of a legion of Kenyan movie fans who swarmed into cinemas on opening weekend to get a taste of Wakanda. This movie which has an ensemble black cast is making waves internationally. It has made a whopping $387 million worldwide and you'll be glad to know Kenya is a key contributor to that figure.
Here are the impressive figures that Black Panther posted between Friday, February 16th and Sunday, February 18th according to numbers reported by the film's official Kenya distributor, Crimson Multimedia.
1. It has surpassed the Ksh 20 million mark
Black Panther has grossed Ksh 21, 491,000 million in the Kenyan box office. These numbers do not include the Thursday preview shows and pre-premiere screening in Kisumu.
2. High footfall in cinemas
39,385 people attended a screening of Black Panther in Kenya this past weekend. That's an average of 4,400 people for each of the nine cinemas across the country.
3. First Marvel movie to feature a Kenyan
Captain America Civil War featured South African actor John Kani and there are other actors of Nigerian descent that have been featured in Marvel movies. This is the first movie to have a Kenyan actress, Lupita Nyong'o, as part of the main cast.
