Is Kiswahili that hard honestly? Who would have thought that we'd debate about a word as simple as a bank in Swahili. So, as Kenyans, which language are we truly comfortable with? I so badly want to insert a laughing emoji here about 'banki' vs 'benki' but oh well. So, here's the lowdown.
When I saw the 'benki' vs 'banki' on Twitter I actually assumed we were deciding on what to call our weed after we legalize it like South Africa did but it all has to do with the new currency rollout. Kenyans were unsure about the Swahili spelling of 'banki' on the new currency notes with some claiming Tanzania got the word right by writing 'benki'. I mean, Kiswahili is
their language, right?
Renowned Swahili author Ken Walibora spoke to Kenyans.co.ke and put an end to the debate saying, "I'm not an English expert but I do believe the 'A' in the word 'Bank' is pronounced as it is rather than as an 'E', thus 'Banki' over 'Benki".
So there you have it folks, both spellings are correct. However, the 'banki' vs 'benki' reactions are quite hilarious.
