The Island is a play written by Athol Fugard, John Kani, and Winston Ntshona. The Island  is set on Robben Island, a former prison in Cape Town, South Africa, and follows two inmates, John and Winston, as they serve out the last days of their sentences. The play is incredibly powerful and emotionally charged from the very beginning.
The play addresses issues of racism and oppression, which were rampant in South Africa during the time of the play's setting. Athol's play has been praised for its powerful writing.
Now adapted for Kenyan audiences, The Island will be showing this weekend at the Kenya National theater. The directors promise a powerful and moving play that will leave audiences with a greater understanding of the struggles of the apartheid era.
