It's black history month in the U.S. and black artists have contributed immensely to the cultural fabric of the country. Dance is one of the most visible ways black culture manifests and one of the most iconic dancers to ever do it is Alvin Ailey.
Born in 1931, Alvin founded the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (AAADT) and its affiliated Ailey School as centers for developing black artists and showcasing the universality of the black experience through dance.
Alvin's work fused modern dance with theater, ballet, and jazz with African-American vernacular, creating hope through choreography that continues to spread worldwide awareness of Black life in the U.S.
Alvin gave us amazing moves such as the Electric Slide, the Vogue and The Mooche.
