A film by a Zambian director who is based in Wales won an award at the recently held BAFTAs. The British Academy Film and Television Awards (BAFTAs), celebrate excellence in film and television much like what the Oscars do. On February 18th 2018 when the ceremony took place, the film, which is about an African girl who is accused of practicing witchcraft, won the award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer or Director.
I Am Not A Witch follows an 8-year old Zambian girl who is accused of practising black magic. The film is set in Zambian countryside where the girl, Shula, is exiled from her village and sent to a neighbouring witch camp. In the camp, she is initiated into her new life as a 'witch' and she is tied to a ribbon which she's warned not to cut off or else tragedy will befall her. But, should she accept her fate, as innocent as she is?

According to Wales Online, the film is also the first Zambian film to be shown at this year's Cannes Film Festival. Rungano Nyoni, who is the director of the film, has lived in Wales ever since she was eight years old. She was not prepared for the win and she accepted the award with so much humility.
African filmmakers are still setting the bar high and as we wait for the Oscars, we are hoping Kenya's Watu Wote, nominated for one, will win.
