A Look at Citizen TV's New Telenovela 'The Candidate'
The Candidate is the new telenovela taking over Citizen TV's 10 pm weekday time slot, replacing Mujeres de Negro whose fiery conclusion still has me shaking. The Candidate is a Televisa production that ran from November 2016 and February 2017. It tackles politics and corruption as its main themes.
It stars Silvia Navarro (Amor Bravío, Catalina & Sebastián) as Regina Bárcenas, an honourable and idealistic politician who tries to make her country a better place for her fellow citizens. Regina is the current senator who is married to the city governor, Alonso San Román, with whom she has a teenage son, Emiliano.
Their picture-perfect family life is soon wrecked by scandal when a sex tape of Emiliano and a woman named Florencia is leaked to the public. Florencia, portrayed by Fabiola Guajardo who you may remember in her role as Gabriela in Passion & Power, then gets killed in a mysterious manner. This leads Regina to do damage control to save her family's reputation in the face of public scrutiny. Meanwhile, Regina's campus sweetheart, Gerardo, reappears in her life and is set on winning back her love after divorcing his wife.
Silvia Navarro is joined by a stellar supporting cast that includes Víctor González (Pasión Morena) as Gerardo and Susana González (Julia from Passion & Power) who plays Cecilia, Regina's sister.
The show has so far been interesting since it debuted a week ago. What do you think of it?
