Ernest Mugo is a Kenyan based fashion blogger, celebrity and personal stylist notoriously known for his chic yet casual men's blog, 'Diaries of The Modern Gent' and his love for dogs and books. I had a chat with him to find out more about his venture into fashion blogging.
KB: What made you decide to start fashion blogging?
I started blogging in June 2017 when I was on my annual leave. At the moment blogging had really proliferated in the country and a vast number of my friends and family had tried to taunt me to start one.
I was hesitant at the beginning considering the time and effort I saw bloggers put. As soon as I hit publish on my first post, I felt I was home.
KB: How would you describe your personal style and is there a person who is a fashion inspiration to you?
My style is sleek, adventurous and comfortable. There's a lot of juxtaposition in my wardrobe since I'm mostly on an overall at work but every day is a new day thus I try to be adventurous, constantly trying new themes.
As for my fashion inspiration, well that would be Ne-Yo and Omari Hardwick.
KB: Any current fashion obsessions?
My current obsessions are low cut snickers and checked pants.
KB: Blogging can be quite a handful, how do you manage your time to keep DOTMG up and running efficiently?
Removing the snooze option on my alarm!  Honestly it's a hustle but over the past year I've learnt to create time for it even if I have to write a post on my way to work. I also schedule several posts beforehand so that I don't get overwhelmed by other duties and neglect the site.
KB: What would you say is the biggest challenge about fashion blogging?
First, since I'm not a full time blogger I would have to say time and quality content. Building an authentic following for your blog since it requires consistency is the second challenge I face.
KB: Most Kenyans have been venturing into YouTube to expand their creative works. However, few fashionistas successfully cultivate on the platform. Why do you think this is so and have you considered starting a YouTube channel yourself?
The market for content has surely shifted to YouTube as compared to blogging because a vast majority of content is best served via video since their market niche would benefit from visuals. Videos also provide a real feel of interaction.
On starting a YouTube channel, I haven't considered starting a YouTube page because I prefer writing and I also feel that it is more time consuming.
KB: What is the one thing your readers would be surprised to know about you?
I can be a complete goofball and although I do spend most of my day dealing with pretty serious stuff at work, I will always make a joke or do something silly and have a laugh when I get together with friends.
Apart from blogging,I'm an aero engineer!
KB: A lot of people think that blogging is a great way to make money online. Do you have some tips for those interested in earning from blogging?
For those interested in making a living out of it I would urge them to be consistent in their content creation. To maintain a vision and voice for their blog, authenticity would sometimes force you to politely pass on an opportunity to remain genuine.
I would also prompt them to be patient. Like every other business it takes time to grow.
