The festive season is around the corner, which means you might be doing a bit more entertaining than you're used to. Impress your guests with these simple and affordable cocktails.

Vodka Lemon Soda

You'll need a whole yellow lemon, soda water, sugar, ice, plain vodka a blender (optional)
  • Cut a whole yellow lemon into 6 squares. Put them in the blender.
  • Add ice
  • Put a teaspoon of sugar
  • Add soda water and plain vodka in the ratio of 1:1 then blend and serve.

Mango Kamikaze

You'll need triple sec, mango juice, lemon juice, sugar syrup, ice, plain vodka, red chillies (optional)
  • A shot of triple sec
  • A shot of mango juice
  • A shot of lemon juice
  • A shot of sugar syrup
  • Chop fresh chillies to taste.
  • Stir the ingredients so they mix together then add plain vodka (about 40 ml)
  • Add ice in a jar, pour the in the liquids and shake to mix all the ingredients. Pour it in a glass and serve.

Spicy Vodka

You'll need fresh red chillies, mango juice, paprika, tumeric, lemon wedge, ice and vodka.
  • Chop chillies to taste
  • Add a small amount (about 3/4 of a  teaspoon) of paprika and tumeric to the jar with the chillies. Add a shot of mango juice. Muddle them so they mix a little.
  • Add 40 ml of plain vodka.
  • Add ice into the jar and shake before serving. Garnish with lemon wedge.
Bitters are added to cocktails in small amounts to flavour cocktails. They were originally used as medicine in the Middle Ages. Bitters are the 'chemical X' that will spice up your cocktail.

Homemade Bitters

You'll need 750 ml of dark rum, fennel seeds, fenugreek seeds, bay leaves, coriander, black tea bag, cloves, cinnamon, cardamon, orange peels.
  • Empty the rum into a clean jar.
  • Add fenugreek seeds, fenugreek seeds, bay leaves, coriander, cloves, cinnamon, cardamon to your taste.
  • Add the black tea bag (to darken the mixture), and orange peels. Stir
  • Seal the jar and leave it in a warm and dark place and leave to steep for two weeks.
  • Shake it everyday as well as before use.

Old Fashioned

You'll need your homemade bitters, dark rum, ice, soda water, orange slice and sugar.
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon of bitters
  • Ice
  • 40 ml of dark rum
  •  Stir then serve.

Daddy's Sins

You'll need sambuca, freshly brewed coffee (not instant coffee), whiskey, ice.
  • Add the sambuca, coffee and whiskey in equal ratios.
  • Add ice (optional) then serve.
TIP: If you don't have a shot glass or a measuring cup, as your pour your alcohol, count to four then stop. You'll have approximately 40 ml of booze.
