NATIV and Pocket Stories are inviting submissions from African creatives for their inaugural NATIV Shorts Competition. Selected winners will receive a prize of $2,500, which includes cash, equipment, and mentorship. The competition is open to visual storytellers with experience in creating documentaries, promos, TV commercials, branded content, and YouTube content. Creatives who have worked with international clients are particularly encouraged to apply.
NATIV is a platform that connects African creatives with international buyers looking for filmmakers for projects in Africa. The competition aims to bring attention to the experiences of being an African creative. Submissions will be accepted from January 24th, 2023 at 2pm UK time until February 15th, 2023 at 2pm UK time. The application process includes two stages. In the first stage, participants must apply through the NATIV website and submit a 30-second clip and five photographs on their experiences as an African creative. All submissions will be reviewed and 12 participants will be chosen to advance to the next stage.
To be eligible for the competition, participants must be a citizen and permanent resident of one of six countries (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ghana, Nigeria, and Gambia), have an African nationality with a valid passport, have their own equipment and a track record as a content creator, be able to commit to the competition timeline, and have a "good eye" for strong narratives and images. The organizers of the NATIV Shorts Competition will provide mentorship with African and global media industry executives, including an exclusive masterclass with Jane Mote of Pocket Stories.
