Valentine's Day is all about love and nothing gets the heart racing faster than red wine, chocolates and cuddling up to a nice romantic flick. With so many syrupy romantic movies to choose from, it might be hard to settle on your perfect Valentine's watch. Luckily, we've rounded up 10 of our favourites for you. Have some Kleenex ready because there are some real tearjerkers in here.
Titanic
The tragic tale of Rose and Jack is one that will live forever. All Leo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet had to do was board a glamorous ship and fall in love. But of course, James Cameron wasn't going to make it that easy for us. The movie's fiery romance is worth every second of the three hours and 14 minutes' runtime. And how about that Celine Dion soundtrack? Goosebumps!
The Notebook
This movie was well on its way to becoming a romance classic as soon as it cast Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams - two annoyingly good-looking humans who somehow manage to look even better when together. Their chemistry can be felt throughout the twisting wartime plot set in the 1940s.
When Harry Met Sally
This movie title is the kind that makes you pause and think, "When did I meet my partner?". Harry and Sally form a connection. Ten years later they meet and this time they want to become friends without sex. The Tinder generation will find this movie very interesting.
Valentine's Day
Duh! It might not be considered a classic romcom but the all-star cast which includes the likes of Taylor Swift, Bradley Cooper, Julia Roberts and Anne Hathaway is not bad Valentine's Day company, is it? The movie weaves a satisfying of the expectations, highs and lows of what Valentine's Day brings forth.
Slumdog Millionaire
You'd think cozying up to a kid jumping into a pool of human waste doesn't fit the mould of a lovey-dovey Valentine's watch, but neither did we think Danny Boyle's modern-day Dickensian melodrama would steal our hearts, and then go on to win Best Picture at the Oscars when it came out 10 years ago. This endearing story of star-crossed romance set in colourful Mumbai will shake you, break you, before leaving you a hopeless romantic with its intensely satisfactory ending.
The Proposal
What would you do if your female colleague convinced you to marry her because it will be of mutual benefit? A Canadian editor-in-chief of a publishing house (played by Sandra Bullock) learns that she may face deportation from the U.S because of her expired visa. She convinces her assistant (played by Ryan Reynolds) to temporarily act as her fiancé in order to retain her position. The ending is the most rewarding ever.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
If February reminds you of an ex, this hilarious yet charming movie will give you pointers on why you gotta 'forget your Sarah Marshall'. When a TV producer whose girlfriend is the lead in the show he produces gets dumped, he decides to go on a vacation to Hawaii, for a fresh start. Just as fate would have it, he meets his ex but he also meets someone else.
A Walk to Remember
If you miss your teenage years then this is the perfect movie for you. The story follows the odd teenage romance of a rogue high school senior and an awkward girl. Their relationship is one of discovery and inspiration and it truly makes you fall in love. The ending is also a little tragic but it's filled with hope.
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
An advice columnist wants to break up with a man in 10 days so as to push the boundaries of what she can write. An executive on the other hand is confident that he can make a woman fall for him in 10 days. The best-laid plans of mice and men… or should we say, of Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey. A predictable romcom but hilarious and sweet nonetheless.
Malooned!
Clocking the big 3-0 is scary for most. In this Kenyan romantic drama by legendary director Bob Nyanja, Di and Luther get stuck in a 'loo.' They try by all means to get out but in the struggle, they open up about age, ethnic politics and love. Now that's finding love in a hopeless place. Definitely worth revisiting this classic Kenyan romance.
