Coppélia sometimes subtitled ‘the Girl with the Enamel Eyes’ is a beautiful, uplifting and charming ballet dating from the late 1800’s that has not been performed in Nairobi, Kenya.
It is a story that weaves in romantic comedy, dancing dolls and magic set to wonderful music by Leo Delibes. It was also one of the first ballets to incorporate traditional dances and music, including the Czardas from Hungary and the Mazurka from Poland. Ms. Charmaine Smith is producing Coppélia with Mr. Arnie Umayam directing from the Academy of Dance & Art and with dancers from her Nairobi studio and others supported by the Ghetto Classics Orchestra.
Coppélia tells the story of two young people in love: Swanilda and Franz and his obsession for the mysterious, beautiful girl in the balcony – Coppelia. It is the most performed ballet in the history of the Paris Opera Company and is regularly performed all over the world.
