The Bookworm Gigiri

A Paradise for Little and Big Bookworms

The Bookworm houses app. 1200 books, interspersed with two racks of elegant dresses, walls full of art by resident and monthly rotating artists, and shelves full of diaries, journals and book-ish gifts like mugs, pins and cotton totes. The Bookworm is a bric-a-brac of art, culture and creativity. A little highlight are the licensed Warner Bros. apparel that are proudly made in Kenya.

For questions on books and art you will always find one of the owners there. Led by publisher-turned-librarian and artist duo, Shruti & Drishti, The Bookworm is a rough diamond amongst libraries in Nairobi. The books are carefully selected and regularly updated with relevant new publications from around the world. The tiny container library may not match up to the size of MacMillan library, but its lovingly curated books are a clear indicator for its owners' passion for books and belief in spreading norm-challenging content. Starting with representative and all-inclusive picture books, over genderfluid and nonbinary love in YA novels, to books by African and Black voices, Booker Prize authors and strong left leaning and liberal themes, the selection is definitely choosing to challenge. Self-sustaining on membership, donations and voluntary work, The Bookworm is a constant growing and transforming creative space.
