Teach your dog the "Sit" command 04 Jun 2009

Lifestyle

"Sit" is a useful command. When your dog is sitting, she's not jumping up on you, bolting out the door or snitching your sandwich off the verandah table. An easy way to teach “Sit” is by using a treat to lure your dog into position. Show her the treat, then slowly raise it up and toward the back of her head. As she lifts her nose up following the treat, her back end will lower into the Sit position. When this happens, say "Good Sit" and reward with the treat. After luring several times, eliminate the treat-lure. Use the same hand motion as when luring, but with your hand empty. Expecting a treat, your dog will sit. Give plenty of verbal praise, and give a treat you have kept hidden in your pocket or your other hand. Gradually decrease the times you give a treat, but use verbal praise and/or petting as the reward after you know they clearly understand what you want. Many people think they have to schedule a long period of time to train their dogs, however, you can practice “Sit” while the kettle boils, while you retrieve something from your car or while having coffee on the verandah. Teach your dog the "Wait" command 01 Jul 2009

Lifestyle

Having your dog wait for things can be very convenient. This is how to train her to wait:Start with your pup sitting, Show her a treat and let her nibble as you slowly lower it. Some dogs follow the treat to the floor and lie down on the first try. If your pup lies down, praise immediately and give the treat. If your pup stands up or only partly goes into the down position, lower the treat again trying to figure out how far her head goes down before her hind quarters pop back up. Use that level as your starting point, and praise when she lowers her head that far without standing back up. Repeat each time going lower before praising. Soon she will be sitting with her nose to the floor nibbling the treat. At this point, be sure to reward that level of performance with praise, then do it again, but instead of praising when her nose reaches the floor, wait. She will quickly realize that it’s much more comfortable and productive to lie down than to sit there in that position. After she has followed the treat/lure smoothly to the ground in a down position a few times, just make the hand motion without holding the treat. Expecting a treat, she will follow your empty hand and lie down. Praise, praise, praise! From then on, don’t lure your pup into the down position with a treat; just use your empty hand, making the same motion as the cue saying “Down”. Reward with lots of praise and random treats.Amy L. Rapp, Custom Made K-9 SupplyCustomMadeK9@aol.com
