The East Africa Kennel Club Microchipping Service and Data Base 22 May 2013

Lifestyle

The Kennel Club is now well positioned to help combat the dog theft that seems to be on the increase. You may register ANY microchipped pet in the EAKC database, non pedigree dogs and even cats!

East Africa Kennel Club

Biz Directory

The E.A. Kennel Club, as all Kennel Clubs worldwide, is not actually a Club with a swimming pool and bar but registers and keeps records for pedigree dogs

A Dogs Day Out 21 Oct 2010

Lifestyle

Last weekend was the East African Kennel Club Craft Fair to raise money for the Kennel Club. It was hot but really, really nice to see families out with their dogs!  There were beautiful pedigree dogs, and much loved mixed breed mutts as well.

New Year, New Plan 02 Jan 2013

Lifestyle

It’s the time of year that my phone starts to ring off the hook with enquiries about dog training. Most of these are not new puppies, but older dogs that still jump on visitors, steal things from kitchen counters and won’t stay off the furniture.

Spay and neuter your pets in Kenya 04 Mar 2010

Lifestyle

Please do not contribute to the pet overpopulation in Nairobi by breeding your dog.  Please spay and neuter!! I was recently asked by an expat to help her rehome a litter of puppies that had resulted from a brother and sister mating (yuck)! I was out at the KSPCA last Thursday to see if they could place them. I was shocked and saddened to see nearly FIFTY puppies waiting for homes. These were all puppies less than 6 months old. On the whole, most of them looked to be in less than ideal health and under-socialized. This is what happens when the parent dogs are not properly cared for before and during reproduction and the puppies are born into nearly feral conditions. (as often happens when they are not planned for). It is guaranteed that even if you do not intend to produce a litter, your bitch will come in season while you are away on holiday. No one will have noticed until it’s too late, as was the case of the brother and sister mating. If you intend to get a dog, do your research carefully. Do not buy a roadside puppy! Either adopt  from the KSPCA or phone the East Africa Kennel Club for a list of breeders that follow the Kennel Club rules to register their dogs. Please choose carefully and consider adopting a dog in need of a home.

What can I do to help? 29 Jun 2011

Lifestyle

Many, many people comment on the articles I write about the KSPCA and the state of the dogs and cats in Nairobi. Many people want to do something but think, since they cannot take on another pet, have already given away old bedding or made a donation, that there is nothing else they can do.

Nairobi City Council Dog License 11 Feb 2010

Lifestyle

Nairobi City Council Dog Licenses come up for renewal annually. The rate is 500 KSH per dog no matter the age, sex or breeding status. There are several options to make your payment.  If you are an expat, you can check to see if your Embassy will get the licenses renewed for you. Another option is to check with your vet, most of whom will renew them for a small fee. If you are a paid up member of the East Africa Kennel Club you can drop the fee and vet records there: the City Council stops in one day per week to process them. Alternatively, you can go to the Pangani Pound and renew for very little hassle and just the 500 bob fee. Please be sure to get the license as required. The City Council will come around and collect your dogs if you have no proof of the license. It’s then up to you to find your dog and hope he is still in the shape he was in when collected from your yard.

Pedigree Vs Mixed Breed Dogs 06 Jan 2011

Lifestyle

You’ve made the decision to buy a dog.  But should it be a pedigree or mixed breed?  Lest anyone think I am taking sides here, I have to say first that I firmly have one foot in each camp.

Preparation for your pets during the election period 21 Jan 2013

Lifestyle

It doesn’t matter what I think will or won’t happen during the elections, I plan on staying in Nairobi. But I have heard much discussion amongst others- stay or go? Shelter at home? How many days to stock up for? How best to prepare? Remember to keep your pets in mind when thinking through all your options.
