Climbing plants lend structure and form to a garden and there are so many beautiful ones available that it is hard to resist planting too many.  Choose the sites for your climbing plants carefully as many of them get very large. Where is the best place to put climbing plants? There are many options like a trellis on the wall of the house or garage, a chain-link fence, up an old tree that maybe dying (but be careful with new and young trees as a vigorous climber will swamp them and kill them), or special purpose-made support-structures. The best is probably a purpose-made pergola placed in a strategic place on a garden path so that you walk through it as you stroll around your garden. A short pergola can take just one or two climbers whereas a longer one of several metres can take many. For those of you who live in small houses or apartments, you need not be deprived of beautiful climbers as there are small climbers that can be accommodated in a large pot or tub in which a simple climbing trellis can be placed. There are many, many climbing plants to choose from, some with scented flowers like Jasminum, Hoya, Honeysuckle, Mandevillea, Stephanotis, Trachelospermum or Quisqualis to those with spectacular flowers like Thunbergia mysorensis, Petrea (both purple and white varieties), Passiflora, Pandorea, Allanmanda, Dutchman’s Pipe or Bignonia. Examples of climbers planted on a trellis can be seen at the garden centre and there are many available for sale in the nursery.
