Zain sold again 15 Apr 2010

Lifestyle

From Kencell to Celtel to Zain; Kenya’s second largest mobile operator, Zain, has been sold yet again. As anticipated, India’s Bharti Airtel successfully concluded the deal taking over Zain’s African operations. The move places Bharti as the 5th largest mobile company in the world, making them a truly global telecoms company. The Group’s shareholders, whilst showing evidence of discomfort as the deal was being discussed, indicated approval on conclusion with the share price appreciating. Whilst Zain is a distant second to Kenya’s largest mobile operator, Safaricom, the group has 42 million subscribers within 15 African countries. The largest market, Nigeria however, reportedly runs at a loss.It is assumed that a re-branding campaign and change in strategy will again be undertaken, which in Kenya has often been out of step with market demands. One could argue that Zain’s market share in Kenya and indeed Africa (with Celtel) has been affected by the frequent change of name and identity, particularly as the quality of their network is sound. Meanwhile in Kenya, other competitors Yu, also partly owned by the Indian company Essar, and Orange (France Telcom) continue to focus on price to entice consumers. However France Telcom is currently in dispute with the Kenyan Government over missing assets and previously unknown supplier contractual agreements, following its purchase of 51% of the company. The French parastatal is demanding a refund for an equivalent amount to the assets, as well as further capital injection by the Kenya Government in order to continue its strategy implementation and turn the company around CCK, Kenya’s regulatory body,  also plans to introduce changes that will no doubt generate further competition. From July 2010 the migration from networks with one’s full telephone number including the code will be possible. All in all, the year promises to be eventful in the African telecommunications industry.

Carjackers may also rob your house 06 May 2010

Lifestyle

Carjackers are using a new tactic. In the past carjackers generally stole the vehicle, robbed the occupants and left them somewhere.  Now some carjackers are forcing the victims to reveal the location of their homes where they are further robbed.  If you have been car-jacked and are told by the thugs to take them to your home, comply with their request. However, you can also give them reasons not to. You can tell them that there will be a good possibility of them being caught if they do take you home.  Here are some things you might tell them:    * You have a security barrier in your neighborhood    * Two  mobile security vehicles from different companies are watching for anything unusual in your neighborhood    * Police do regular patrols in your neighborhood    * You have guards on your plot with mobile security buttons    * Any other deterrents you can think ofIf they still insist on going to your home, be compliant.  Do anything they request and let them take anything they want.
