What To Do:
-Throw out all items you haven't worn in the last 6 months. This rule applies to everyday work & weekend clothes; you can spare your more dressy gowns reserved for special occasions, or your vintage pieces that are more collectable than wearable.
-Throw out all items that are too small or too big.
-Throw out all items that are faded or torn beyond repair (including shoes & underwear). Now is the time to fix all those fallen buttons and undone hemlines!
-Re-gift all clothes that still have their shop tags; if you haven't removed those tags yet, you never will.
-Spare and dust off classic wardrobe items that every woman MUST have as wardrobe staples:
* Fitted, white button-down shirt
* Little black dress
* Push-up bra
* Black stiletto pumps
* Black straight-leg pants
* Wrap dress (any colour)
These staples will keep you dressed appropriately regardless of what trends come and go.
-Buy new underwear; it's a practical & inexpensive way to perk up getting dressed in the morning.
-Use your renewed organizational energy to sort the clothes you have left according to type; consolidating all shirts, dresses, skirts, etc. makes putting outfits together much easier as everything is clearly displayed.
-Sort through all your real and costume jewelry and give away out-dated pieces. Don't stay stuck wearing the same things year after year - your jewelry style should evolve.
-Make new things out of old by re-purposing items you already own. In the lead-up to the holiday season last year, I put scissors to an old vintage dress I never wear, but whose colour (electric blue) I love. In the end I got had a great midi (mid-calf) skirt and an elaborate crop-top to wear with jeans.
- Begin the year on a compassionate note by donating your surplus clothes to charities and to those less fortunate.
*My personal TIP to keep my closet under control is: NEVER BUY NEW HANGERS. If I happen to run out of hangers, then I obviously have too many clothes, and its time to purge!
