If you know or suspect that your dog may be frightened (dogs that are fearful of storms, lightening, thunder, gunshots or loud noises are easily guessed to be frightened of fireworks) there are a number if things that you can do to make it easier for your pup.
Dose your dog with Rescue Remedy. This is usually available at Nakumat near the Organic section or at health food stores such as Elixer or Healthy U. Rescue Remedy is an all-natural Bach’s Flower Essence. A 35 kilo dog could have about 8 drops administered about 20 minutes before dark if that’s when the fireworks seem to start in your surrounding area. You cannot overdose your dog. It will not sedate them or knock them out, just calm them a bit.
If your dog has been crate-trained and you have a crate, crate your dog in the house with some white noise to mask the fireworks and pull the drapes. Having a TV or stereo on a bit loud should help. If you give your dog bones or any special treat, let them have it during this time to keep them occupied and hopefully create a positive association between the noise and a yummy treat.
If you don’t have a crate or have not crate-trained your dog, then you may want to safely confine them in the house, garage or dobie area. White noise and a treat would work in this situation too.
It’s a great time to double check your fence or wall for holes. Dogs sometimes know about a hole or weak spot in the fence but mostly don’t want to leave the compound. During a big fright they may just think that if they can leave the compound, the noise or lights will stop.
Be careful about opening the gate during fireworks as frightened dogs will oftentimes bolt out in a panic even if they usually express no real interest in going out of the gate. Dogs that get out during fireworks often get disoriented. When they are frightened, it may take several days to catch them even if they can see familiar people. Dogs should always wear a collar and id tag. You can make your own tag for temporary use during this time of year by using a keytag and ring. Cover the writing with cello tape to prevent it from getting wet. I always advise people to keep a collar on dogs that look like KSPCA specials, the village dogs or the roadside dogs. No one takes any notice of them usually, so one wearing a collar would tip off people that it’s an owned dog.
Last but not least, if invited to any sort of party that may feature fireworks, it’s best to leave your pup at home. Many people will light fireworks here at July 4th parties, Guy Fawlkes or even big birthday parties. Your pup will be much more at home without the fireworks.
