The current lecture series started in April so two have already been held:
- Plants for a Tropical Garden by Noel Hays was held on 7th April
- Garden Design, including colour, shape and form by Liz Lowe was held on 19th May.
22nd June: Living Soil and Organic Pest Control
By Anja and Joachim Weber.
This will be an excellent lecture by the husband and wife team who have considerable experience of organic vegetable farming in East Africa and advising small holder farmers in many African countries.
20th July: Growing Orchids
By Heather Campbell and Ingeborg Gonella.
Heather and Ingeborg between them have over 50 years experience of orchid growing in Kenya, both indigenous and exotic species and varieties, and will explain the do’ and don’t’s of orchid growing to ensure success.
21st September: Planting Containers and The Attraction of Indigenous Trees

Barry has been growing plants of various types in Kenya for nearly 50 years and has specialised in ferns, begonias, bromeliads, gesneriads, succulents and indigenous trees. He always tries to pass on his enthusiasm at his lectures.
Each lecture starts at 09.30 a.m. and runs until approximately 12.00 noon. The cost is Shs.2, 000 per lecture for members and the same for non members plus Shs.1, 300 subscription. For non-members the attraction of joining the KHS is not limited to just the garden courses but for the normal monthly meetings and other activities. The programme for the remainder of the year includes:
- 4th June: Meeting at Brackenhurst, Limuru, for a talk by Dr. Mark Nicholson on the naming of plants and why from time to time these names change.
- 27th August: Meeting at Waridi Farm, Athi River for a talk by Dr. Dino Martins on pollination and the good and bad dudus for us gardeners.
- 9th – 11th September: Flower Show at Muthaiga Club.
This will be preceded if interest warrants by a demonstration by Anja Weber on exhibiting at a flower show to be held at the Plants Galore Garden Centre, Kigwaru. - 29th October: Plant Sale – this very popular plant buying and social occasion is always well attended for the plant bargains that are on offer.
- November: A talk by Arne Witt on the problems of invasive plants in Kenya
