Menswear for women, that is. It’s not the newest trend out there but I just can’t get enough of it. I love a crisp, fitted, white shirt, the pressure of a tie around my collar, the unfussy flatness of an Oxford shoe, slouchy blazers, patterned hankies that you shove into your jacket pocket…
What’s better than a woman enveloped in the masculine lines of a slim-cut suit? Visually it’s very subversive, and has a sexy femme fatale mystery about it, non? For those of you keen to try the trend but who don’t want to go overboard (like me!), I suggest the following:
- Watch and be inspired by Woody Allen’s classic movie “Annie Hall” (1977).
- Layer items you already own – collared shirt, waistcoat, jacket.
- Incorporate pinstripe, tweed, argyle, paisley, and other masculine patterns and textures into your wardrobe.
- Think in opposites - feminine & masculine, hard & soft, dark & colourful…
- Outsize is in so don’t be afraid to wear an oversize blazer or voluminous pants.
- Cuff the bottom on your pants, wear socks.
- Substitute a velvet ribbon or scarf for a bowtie.
- Silk lapel tuxedo jackets are classic: wear casually with jeans for a modern edge.
- Don’t take it too seriously, it’s tongue-in-cheek!
