The UNDP initiative with its name inspired by the second stanza of Kenya's National anthem, hopes to promote active citizen participation in good governance. Its writing competition taking place this year of general elections hopes to give youth a positive image unlike that of the 2007 elections in which many were involved in post election violence. Their positive image would come through airing views on what democratic governance and leadership is all about in turn winning at least 750 USD in addition to paid internship opportunities.
Contributions coming in the form of typed or handwritten essays and even DVD clips less than 5 minutes long in English or Kiswahili that are innovative, creative focused on accountability, and transparency issues and expectations of the new constitutions, produced by the youth would be rewarded. The essays of 3,500 words are required to identify explicit and implicit governance, challenges in the country and how issues impact on life quality in the country.
The overall winner would receive $2000 USD (about Sh170, 000). The runner ups in the DVD and essay categories, $1000 USD (Sh87, 000) and third place, $750USD (about Sh64000). More so, in addition to receiving plaques, their innovative ideas highlighted in their essays would be implemented as projects and taken into action.
The winners would also receive at least "three months of paid internships in various organisations," says Rebecca Muniu one of the organizers, with the advantage of having a mentor.
Youth have two more days to apply or wait for the next competition. Essays and DVDs were to be submitted to UNDP Amkeni Wakenya offices, at Mayfar Nairobi. Awards would be given tentatively on 28 February. For details on requirements, Rebecca can be contacted on 0203748578 or This email address is being protected from spambots.
