Things to consider as a parent:
1. It's not advisable to let your children go home with a random taxi parked outside a venue/party.
2. Always pre-arrange a taxi from a reputable company to collect your child at a certain time and location.
3. Have the taxi company give you the drivers name, mobile phone number and vehicle registration. If the company agrees that Peter is collecting your child, tell your child not to accept a taxi driver named Paul, etc.
4. Consider not allowing teenage girls to travel in taxi's on their own. It's advisable if a male friend rides with them or they travel in a group.
5. Ask your child to tell you when they are leaving the location and when to expect them back home. If this time lapses, call the taxi company, your security provider or local police station.
6. Make sure your child has credit for their mobile phone so they can call you if there is any problem.
7. Many people think that taxis are safer than self-driving at night. Be aware that taxis also get carjacked and are seen as easy targets.
8. Ask your security provider if they will escort a taxi from the venue/party to your home. Some companies will provide this service.
9. Consider giving your teenager a personal tracking device.

Taking taxis in Kenya
Written by Glen EdmundsA teenage girl was left on the side of a deserted road at 4:00 am in the Karen/Langata area by her taxi driver. She couldn't remember exactly where the house she was staying at was located, and the taxi driver tired of trying to find the location and made her get out of the car. Luckily, another friend of hers that lived in the area answered her phone call and came to her rescue. Please educate your teenage children about the importance of using reputable taxi companies.
