Some can swim and some can move fast, but I’ve never seen a snake on a bike!

It’s the Watamu Antivenom Triathlon 2011 this Saturday, held at Ocean Sports hotel with Registration at 2pm for a 3.30pm start.
You can enter as an individual (Ksh 2,000/-) or if you are not feeling quite as energetic as some, you can get together with some friends and enter as a 3-member team (Ksh 4,500/- per team).  The Triathlon starts with a warm-up 500m swim out into the Watamu Marine Park and back, then hop on your bike for a 20km leisurely cycle through the back roads of Watamu, and finish it with a 5km run (or collapse if you are anything like me!) back to Ocean Sports for a well-deserved cold drink.  All of this activity is in aid of the James Ashe Antivenom Trust (JAAT).

“The Trust was formed by Royjan Taylor and Sanda Ashe in memory of James Ashe, who had dedicated his life to the conservation of snakes and the reduction of deaths by snakebite.  The main goal of the Trust is to bring good quality Antivenom into Kenya and to distribute this Antivenom at cost price to those in need as well as to deliver education both in the ‘first instance’ of snakebite as well as in the subsequent correct usage and monitoring of Antivenom treatment.   The Trust, under its old name, The Watamu Antivenom Fund, has an enormous impact on its immediate area, using Watamu in Malindi District, as it’s working base.  The Trust at present purchases its Antivenom from the South African Institute for Medical Research (SAIMR) and this is then being made available throughout Kenya” [www.bioken.com]

So, well worth supporting, whether contributing in sweat or encouragement.  Payment is at Ocean Sports on registration and it will be a great day out for the family.
