It is the 55th staging of this event, the idea behind it being a nostalgic one – allowing only classic cars built before 1974, and avoiding the more powerful turbo-charged vehicles or four wheel drives. The event starts in Mombasa and revvs through Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, over a distance of 5,000 km in ten days, with night stops at exotic and famous hotels and lodges. This year the reigning champion, Ian Duncan, one of Kenya’s most successful drivers, will be driving a specially modified Ford Capri, and he will be joined by a variety of competitors from all walks of life in cars of all characters. Sponsored by Kenya Airways, the rally is a spectacular motor sports event and a much-loved challenge. Be there at the tusks for the start of it.
