He based himself in a large Swahili house with the clinic at the front and his home, with his wife and four children, at the back. His ‘low fee’ patient clinics were so popular he had to extend his hours just to get through the numbers. He also began holding free eye camps in the surrounding areas, offering eye treatment to all, regardless of their tribe or religious background, although he did spread his Christian faith to those who would listen. Dr Bill was probably the first surgeon to place an interocular lens implant into a Kenyan eye back in 1980, which is now a routine procedure in all cataract surgery. He did in 1983, but the Lighthouse for Christ Eye Centre continues in strength, with a satellite office now open in Voi and mobile eye clinics across the country. The main clinic remains in the same position today and has treated countless patients of all races and creeds.
