I was on board a flight from Nairobi to Malindi on Monday morning, the Fly540 flight that continues up to Lamu. The flight was packed with journalists, their telephones, cameras and other paraphernalia – all out to be the first to milk the story. They were booking boats to take them to Lamu whilst the plane was taking off. Meanwhile the television news continues to show pictures of a tranquil coastline with the words ‘Murder in Kenya’ emblazoned across it. Very occasionally there is a map on the screen but does it pinpoint where the tragedy occurred? No. It shows the whole of Kenya and it shows Lamu. I fear that Lamu will take the brunt of this media onslaught and the rest of the 536km of coastline will be tarred with a similar brush. When the journalists return to their comfortable lives in their first world countries, who will be left to pick up the pieces?

Foreign media threaten the Coast again
Written by Sara Engel – Watamu Property Services
The tragic events in Kiwayu last weekend were not a trivial affair by any means, and I do feel wholeheartedly for those involved and their families. However, does it really warrant the foreign media descending on Lamu and denigrating the Kenya Coast as one entity?
