Fighting to eliminate premature deaths in Donkeys on Lamu Island

Donkeys have been dying of colic as a result of eating plastic bags whilst scavenging for food on rubbish dumps in Lamu.
The Donkey Sanctuary, a UK registered charity in Devon, opened a sanctuary in July 1987 on Lamu, providing veterinary management, treating ill and injured donkeys.  The project is lead by a vet and farrier along with a team of trained donkey helpers who can visit communities on Lamu and other islands.  There is also an education officer who visits the local schools as well as meeting and educating groups of donkey owners.  In June this year, The Donkey Sanctuary and the Lamu Safi Environmental Group, after much lobbying of the local authorities, succeeded in changing the bylaws and getting plastic bags banned in Lamu. The plastic bag ban will radically lessen the risk of plastic-related injury or premature death in donkeys in the area.  To see more of the Donkey Sanctuary’s work and how you can donate to their cause visit www.thedonkeysanctuary.org.uk.
