/biz-directory/bridges-organic-health-restaurantIs There Oil in Kenya? 01 Oct 2009
Uganda’s decision to open itself up to oil exploration early last year is bearing fruit. Tullow, an Anglo-Irish company, recently announced its discovery of a substantial find in the Lake Albert Basin. An estimated 700 million barrels is expected to be retrieved. In 2007, it was estimated that Africa’s reserves were 117 billion barrels, making Uganda’s Lake Albert find a ‘drop in the ocean’. Tullow has been exploring for oil in Uganda and Ghana since 2006 and has production interest in at least ten other African countries. Meanwhile, Kenya’s oil explorations in the North of the country by the Canadian company Lion Petroleum has not yet borne fruit. But Lion’s recent merger talks with Raytec, also Canadian, are likely to provide financing for further exploration. This oil exploration spreads into Ethiopia and war-torn Somalia albeit closer to Puntland. Kenya also has oil exploration being undertaken by the Chinese. There is clearly a growing interest in oil exploration in Africa. Another Canadian company, Vangold, is undertaking a technical evaluation in Rwanda, whilst China has aggressively moved into the continent in search of the ‘black gold’, its largest supplier of oil being Angola. Even if no oil is found in Kenya, the country still stands to benefit from regional oil production as exports are likely to be passed through the country and its refinery would likely get increased business. The Indian conglomerate Essar’s acquisition of 50% of Kenya Petroleum Refineries Ltd this year will see the upgrading and expansion of capacity of the Mombasa based refinery. In 2007, the African continent accounted for just under 10% of the world’s oil production; Nigeria, Libya, Egypt, Algeria and Angola being the main producers. However the question remains, will the addition of more oil finds to Africa’s rich array of mineral resources finally relieve the world’s poorest continent from abject poverty? Stay tuned... Learn why pollination is important to the well-being of humans, who are the chief pollinators and how we can protect them. PollinationPollination is the transfer of pollen from the anthers to the stigma of a flower. Seeds and fruits are produced when a flower is pollinated. As plants can't move around they rely on wind or various creatures to transport pollen to and between flowers. Most cereal crops are wind pollinated while most other plants rely largely on insects, especially bees and honey bees to ensure that flowers produce seeds and fruit. We depend on pollinators and could not do without them. One in every three bites of food we eat is thanks to a pollinator.BeesBees are our chief pollinators. Therefore, we need to deal with bees protectively, rather than killing them indiscriminately. Here are some ways of dealing with bees protectively.•Provide any suitable nesting site for honey bees where they are required, such as beehives, or even wooden boxes, or almost any weatherproof container say around 10 litres in volume. Even old tins and clay pots are suitable.•Conversely, try to avoid providing suitable nesting sites where bees are not wanted, so that they have nowhere to nest. •Sometimes bees do nest where they are not wanted. In such cases if it is possible to leave the bees alone, they are likely to leave you alone. However, if disturbed, they can be a nuisance and even dangerous. Noise, such as from motor lawn mowers, is very irritating to bees, so too are some smells. Bees tend to be less aggressive during rain and at night. •If it is not possible to live with the bees then they must either be removed or destroyed. It is almost impossible to get bees to move of their own accord. A friendly beekeeper may do it for one but the procedure requires a skilled and knowledgeable practitioner, otherwise it will be a waste of time and effort, may be dangerous and is unlikely to be successful. Further information on beekeeping may be obtained from the Beekeeping section of the Kenya Agriculture Research Institute, which may be able to assist in some cases. Some further guidance about bees and beekeeping may be found in the books Beekeeping, published in The Tropical Agriculturist series of Macmillan, CTA (www.cta.int) and the international Bee Research Association.
